Chinese sericultural resources began to spread westward after the sixth century. From the fifteenth century onward, Chinese white mulberry and domesticated silkworms were transmitted to the West on multiple occasions and were gradually adopted on a large scale within European sericulture. Compared with sericultural resources in other regions of the world before the nineteenth century, Chinese sericultural resources possessed distinctive characteristics that endowed them with significant relative advantages, thereby attracting considerable interest from European sericultural producers. Through the domestication and breeding of Chinese white mulberry and silkworms, European sericulture and silk manufacturing—particularly in Italy and France—achieved notable advances. Europe gradually emerged as one of the principal silk-producing regions. Due to changing demands in the development of the European sericultural industry and the intensification of integration of global resources conducted by the West, Chinese sericultural resources gradually declined in significance within the European context, and their position of relative advantages were reshaped through competition with the others after the mid-nineteenth century. The decline of the relative advantages of China’s sericultural resources in the modern period stemmed from internal developmental issues, while the shift in their positional status was influenced by an external environment dominated by Western power.
