南宋时期太湖地区产生了“苏湖熟，天下足”等谚语，史料证明浙西低田稻作种植是谚语产生的主要支撑。历史上太湖流域以种植一季晚熟的粳稻为主。南宋时期，随着经济重心南移，浙西低田全面开发，农业经济特别是低田水稻生产发展显著，水稻品种增多，以水稻为主的作物种植制度趋于多样化，水稻产量提高。南宋浙西低田水稻种植的进步，促进了浙西经济繁荣，提高了浙西经济地位，催生了谚语。
Abstract:
During the Southern Song Dynasty, proverbs like "a good harvest in Suzhou and Huzhou, a life of abundance for all the country" came into being in Taihu Lake region. Historical literature reveals that those proverbs were created on the basis of low-field rice cultivation in western Zhejiang. Historically, cultivation in Taihu Lake region had mainly relied on one season of late japonica rice. But during the Southern Song Dynasty, the economic center shifted southward. Hence the low-field cultivation in western Zhejiang came into full swing and the agricultural economy, low-field rice in particular, witnessed marked advance, with an increased number of rice grains, diversified systems of rice-centered crop cultivation and greater rice yield. It is the progress in low-field rice cultivation in western Zhejiang during the Southern Song Dynasty, resulting in economic prosperity and elevated status of western Zhejiang, that gives birth to afore-mentioned proverbs.
