瓜是重要的农作物和食物资源，因其与粮为辅，又多便于制作贮藏，不少品种还可利用隙地、棚架种植生长，在农业种植中有着独特而重要的地位。我国古代瓜业发展大致分为三个阶段：上古时代北方瓜业比较兴盛，在上古文献中留下丰富的历史文化印迹。秦汉至隋唐时期，南北共同发展，甜瓜、瓠瓜、冬瓜、越瓜的种植比较兴盛，种植技术明显提高，品种信息急剧增加。五代、宋元以来，西瓜、丝瓜、南瓜等相继传入并迅猛发展，黄瓜的种植、食用明显改进，我们传统瓜业的品种结构基本形成。人们充分利用闲隙土地或空间见缝插针种植生产，发挥了积极的社会作用。甜瓜、瓠、冬瓜、越瓜、哈密瓜五种本土原有瓜种，黄瓜、西瓜、丝瓜、南瓜四种外来物种在历史上相继出现，不断丰富我国瓜业资源，构成了我国瓜业演进拓展的生动历史。

Melon is an important crop and food resource supplemented with grain that is much convenient to produce and preserve. Many varieties can also be grown in open space or with trellis, which has an unique and important position in agricultural planting.The development of the ancient Chinese melon industry is roughly divided into three stages: in the ancient times, the northern melon industry was relatively prosperous, leaving rich historical and cultural imprints in the ancient documents.From the Qin and Han dynasties to the Sui and Tang dynasties, the North and the South melon industry developed together. The cultivation of sweet melon, bottle gourd, wax gourd, and snake melon was relatively prosperous, planting technology was significantly improved, and variety information increased sharply.Since the Five Dynasties, the Song and Yuan Dynasties, watermelon, towel gourd, pumpkins, etc. have been introduced and improved rapidly. There was a great development of cucumber planting for it was widely accepted as edible food.The variety structure of our traditional melon industry has basically formed.People have made full use of idle land or space to produce plants and played a positive social role. Five native species of melon, sweet melon, bottle gourd, wax gourd, snake melon, and Hami melon, four exotic species of cucumber, watermelon, towel gourd, and pumpkin have appeared in history, continuously enriching our country’s melon industry resources, which constitute a vivid history of the evolution and expansion of Chinese melon industry.
